Choosing Between Media and Entertainment Law Firms by Cost

Many producers assume only a large corporate firm can protect a film properly. The invoice often says otherwise. A first-time filmmaker at a big firm can pay senior rates for work that a junior associate completes. Those hours come out of a budget that was meant for cameras, crew and post-production and nobody notices until the money is gone.

When producers compare media and entertainment law firms, three questions decide the answer: what the firm covers, who does the work and how it bills. A full-service boutique can handle development, financing, production legal work, distribution, talent representation and general counsel under one roof. Documents of the quality a larger firm delivers can arrive at a fraction of the cost. Billing deserves its own look. A firm paid by the hour gains nothing from a quick deal. A firm built on long-term client relationships gains when the client’s career grows.

Ask each firm to list the stages of a project it handles in-house. Ask who drafts the first version of a cast agreement and who reviews it. Ask what a flat monthly retainer costs against the hourly rate. A firm with real production experience answers these in specific numbers and names. A firm with none answers in adjectives. Producers who collect three written answers can compare them line by line before signing anything.
