Most people book their New Year's Eve cruise weeks in advance, pick the menu, sort out the outfits, and then leave the house at the same time they'd leave on any other Friday night. That's usually where things start going sideways. December 31st in Dubai is a completely different animal when it comes to getting around, and the boat is not going to sit at the jetty waiting for anyone.
So how early is early enough? Roughly an hour to an hour and a half before your boarding time, and that's at the jetty, not leaving home. Yes, it feels like a lot. On this particular night it really isn't.
The roads are the real problem
A drive from Marina to Dubai Creek that normally takes 35 minutes or so can easily stretch past an hour once the evening rush builds up, and on New Year's Eve that rush starts around 5 or 6 pm because everybody is heading towards Downtown, Business Bay and the bridges at roughly the same time. Some roads near Burj Khalifa close off completely later in the evening. Then there's parking on the Deira and Bur Dubai side, which is limited on a good day and pretty much a guessing game on this one.
And the dhows keep to schedule. They have a fireworks window to hit, so late guests just get left behind.
Now, the timings themselves. Getting there without the stress

The downside is the crowd. By 7 pm the trains are packed shoulder to shoulder, so if you're coming from the Marina or JLT side, heading out by 5 or 5:30 makes a big difference.
Driving is fine if you're patient and add another 20 to 30 minutes just for finding a spot. Hotel pickup, which comes with a lot of cruise packages, takes that headache away completely, but the drivers know what the roads are like, so pickups on this night often start around 5:30 or 6 pm. Taxis and ride apps are the riskiest choice. Surge pricing, long waits, drivers cancelling. Not something to rely on when the clock matters.
There's also a nice upside to showing up early that people forget about. On a lot of dhows the seating is first come, first served, which means the early crowd gets the good tables on the upper deck with nothing blocking the view. You get to settle in, have a welcome drink, take a few photos of the creek while it's still calm, and basically start the night relaxed instead of out of breath.
On price, expect a jump. A regular creek dinner cruise that's usually somewhere around AED 60 to 150 per person can go to AED 300 to 700 on December 31st, depending on the menu, deck and entertainment. Marina cruises cost more again. The better ones tend to sell out by early December, so booking ahead is worth it.
