Every home has one. The wall above the sofa, the stretch of hallway, the space at the top of the stairs that has been empty since you moved in. It stays empty because filling it properly is expensive, and filling it badly is worse than leaving it alone.
Here are the approaches that work, roughly in order of cost.
Stop looking for one big piece
The instinct is to find a single large artwork that solves the whole wall. This is the most expensive route and often the least satisfying, because one piece has to carry everything.
Two or three medium pieces hung as a group will fill the same space for considerably less, and give you something more interesting to look at. Keep the frames consistent and the spacing tight, around five to eight centimetres between them, and the group will read as deliberate rather than scattered.
Lean, do not hang
If you rent, or you change your mind often, a picture ledge or a deep shelf solves the problem permanently. Leaning art allows you to layer pieces in front of one another, swap things seasonally, and avoid making holes you will have to fill later. It also looks relaxed in a way that carefully hung art sometimes does not.
Make something instead of buying it
Original art is expensive because original art takes time. The alternative most people overlook is making the piece yourself, and the guided formats have improved enormously.
A landscape paint by numbers kit produces a genuinely presentable canvas for around twenty five pounds and ten to twenty hours of pleasant evening work. The results at a reasonable distance are indistinguishable from a decent print, and unlike a print, you made it.
This works particularly well for larger walls, because you can complete two or three canvases in a coordinated palette over a few months and hang them as a set. Doing the same with bought art would run into the hundreds.
Use a photograph you already own
The most personal option, and one that suits hallways and stairwells especially well, is turning a photograph you already have into a piece of art. Finish it properly
Whatever you put up, the framing does most of the work. A cheap print in a good frame reads as considered. An expensive piece pinned flat to the wall reads as temporary.
Canvas art in particular needs stretching over a wooden frame to sit correctly, which is straightforward to do yourself with a DIY frame kit and about half an hour. There are several ways to approach the finished piece, including floating frames and gallery wraps, and the right choice depends more on your room than on the artwork.
Once the wall is done, you will wonder why you left it empty for so long. Most people do.
