Small Car, Big City: Best Compact EVs for Kathmandu Living

Kathmandu is a difficult place to drive through due to crowded roads and narrow lanes. Getting a place to park is sometimes tricky and it is not easy to drive a larger vehicle. A smaller electric car (EV) is often the preferred option for some.

Several EV models are available in Nepal for various kinds of city drivers. Some of them are small and suitable for short trips, and others have more space and can take rougher roads to go to longer destinations beyond Kathmandu.

It depends on the way in which you intend to use the vehicle. Some compact EVs are available in Nepal suitable for urban usage and their characteristics are mentioned below.

Your base to Kathmandu via car may be difficult as the streets are rather narrow and small. Driving large vehicles may be difficult due to uneven surfaces, also parking can be a challenge. For a lot of people, a smaller EV instead is a better option.

What Should You Look for in a Kathmandu EV?

Considerations before comparing models: What is important for daily driving.

Space Saving: A compact car has a small width that is beneficial when navigating through narrow roads or parking in small lots.

Ground clearance: Useful when you are riding on uneven surfaces, such as potholes and speed breakers, particularly if you travel outside central Kathmandu regularly.

Charging: Home charging can help EV ownership be much easier. Purchasers will also want to look for charging bays for greater distances.

Space: A small car might offer great convenience for your family but may not be good for families that frequently move in to and from a vehicle carrying several passengers and/or heavy luggage.

With these factors in mind, several EVs currently sold in Nepal are worth

Considering.

Wuling Mini EV

The Wuling Mini EV is one of the smallest electric cars available in Nepal.

Wuling Nepal lists Standard Range and Long Range versions.

The Standard Range model uses a 16.2 kWh battery, a 30 kW motor, and has a claimed 205 km CLTC range. The Long Range version has a 25.1 kWh battery and a claimed 301 km CLTC range. Both versions have four seats and measure 3,268 mm long and 1,520 mm wide.

MG Comet EV

The MG Comet is another small EV designed around city driving.

MG Nepal lists the Comet as a four-seat electric vehicle with a rear-mounted motor producing 31.26 kW and 110 Nm of torque. The company quotes a claimed range of 230 km.

Like the Wuling Mini EV, the Comet prioritizes maneuverability over maximum space or long-distance capability.

Its small dimensions can help in Kathmandu's crowded streets, especially for drivers who spend most of their time commuting within the city.

Tata Tiago. ev

The Tata Tiago. ev is a more conventional small electric hatchback.

Tata Motors Nepal currently lists long-range Tiago .ev variants, including the XT LR and XZ+ Tech Lux LR. The model offers features such as automatic driving, regenerative braking, rear parking assistance,ce and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The Tia Go. is larger and more conventional than a micro-EV, making it a useful option for buyers who want a compact car without going to the smallest vehicle category.

Tata Tigor EV

The Tata Tigor EV takes the compact EV concept and adds a separate boot.

Tata Motors Nepal lists the Tigor EV with a 26 kWh battery, 48.64 kW motor and 170 Nm of torque. It has a 306 km ARAI-certified range, 172 mm of ground clearance and 316 liters of boot space.

The dimensions remain relatively compact at 3,993 mm long and 1,677 mm wide.

MG4 EV

The MG4 EV sits above the smaller, city-focused models in size and capability.

MG Nepal currently lists Comfort and Deluxe versions. The Comfort has a 51 kWh battery and a 350 km WLTP range, while the Deluxe has a 64 kWh battery and a 435 km WLTP range.

At 4,287 mm long, the MG4 is substantially larger than the Wuling Mini EV, MG Comet and Tata Tiago. ev. It also has a 363-liter boot.

iCAUR V23

The iCAUR V23 offers another approach: a compact electric SUV rather than a small city hatchback.

iCAUR Nepal lists the V23 with a 59.93 kWh battery, a claimed 401 km range and 210 mm of ground clearance. It measures 4,220 mm long and 1,915 mm wide.

Its higher ground clearance is a key difference from the smaller hatchbacks in this comparison. That can help drivers who regularly encounter uneven roads or travel outside the Valley.

However, the V23 is wider than the smaller city EVs. Buyers who regularly drive through very narrow streets should consider this before choosing an SUV format.

The Wuling Mini EV and MG Comet are designed for urban commuting settings. The Tata Tigor EV and Tata Tiago, however, offer the more traditional features of small-car functionality.

The MG4 EV is more spacious and provides a greater range, while the iCAUR V23 is an electric SUV with taller ground clearance.
