Step-by-step process to install metal roofing!
Step#1 Underlayment Process
The first step is to lay down underlayment on the top of the OSB roof deck. To get this, you need to choose a self-healing ice and water membrane to protect the roof deck layer.
The strictest part of this step is to keep the layer wrinkle-free. So,
First, enroll in the underlayment across the roof.
Now, you need to overlap the previous layer by 6 inches to 8 inches.
When you are done rolling it out, you need to cut the flush and pull the rest.
Step#2 Precise panels
The next step is to order the perfect panels to avoid seams in your roof. If this step is mishandled, it can lead to the leakage of water underneath the panels. So, make sure that the matter roofing panels are cut according to the length of the roof. For that, you need a large lift to handle the panels on top of the roof.
Step#3 Bend the Trim
Every trim is different and is used for specific purposes. So, before you install it, you need to cut and bend so that it wraps around the corner. but the question is, how can you achieve that?
You need to make 1-inch cuts with aviation snips to build tabs.
Now fold the tabs with a hand seamer to the required corner.
Step# 4 Secure roof edge molding
The next step is to Secure roof edge molding tightly to the fascia over the underlayment with one-inch roofing nails. This installment is totally dependent on the climate for example in warm climates, the roof edge molding is attached before the underlayment.
Step#5 Join and extend moldings
The next step is to join and extend moldings where the two trims meet. How?
First, you need to cut the bottom underlapping trim.
Now you need to apply sealant on top.
The next step is to lift the bottom hem of the overlapping trim and fit it over the angle.
Step 6 Make a precise layout line
A precise layout line is important to install perfect and even roofing. For that, you can use 3-4-5 methods to establish a layout line 90 degrees to the eave.
First, you need to mark a point 3 feet from the corner.
From that point, you need to measure 4 feet toward the roof ridge.
Now measure 5 from the original corner and mark where you mark the second one.
The next step is to draw a straight line from the first point through the intersection of the second and third points.
Step#7 Set the panels
You need to place foam strips along the edges of the roof. Basically, these strips need to match the shape of the panels and help the water to flow inside. To do that,
Stick the strips to measure roughly one inch from the roof's edge and then tape them to the panels using butyl tape.
To finish up, we need to add a waterproof seal, so apply sealant over the strips in a straight line.
The metal panel must be placed on the top of the strips.
Check whether the panel is in a straight position by measuring the layout line.
Step#8 Tightly place the screws
The next step is to place the screws on both sides of the rib. It is important to fashion the panels to make sure the roof is waterproof. You need to take care of a few things such as:
The space in every row must not be more than 24 inches.
The screws must be placed at every rib on the overlapping side.
Make sure the screws are not under or overtighten.
Step#9 Overlap the panels
Now, carefully overlap the ribs of each panel on the under-lab side because it has a drainage channel to keep water moving.
Step#10 Cover the rake edge
When you are done with the panels, now you have to attach the gable trim. Why is it so necessary? To refrain from getting snow under the roof panels! Use butyl tape on the bottom of the trim and drive screws 12 inches right over the tape.
Final Step: Secure the cap
The last step to install metal roofing is to secure the roof and cap it with the help of butyl tape 4 inches from the top of the peak. This way, the water that falls on the roof will simply go away without touching the underlayment.
