Defence Sarkari Jobs: NDA, CDS, AFCAT, and Agniveer Selection Process

Defence Sarkari Jobs offer opportunities in the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force, through entrance examinations such as NDA, CDS, AFCAT, and through Agniveer recruitment, and opportunities to build careers for aspiring youths. Yet, each test is designed for different levels of education and career options. NDA is meant for aspirants joining defence services post class 12, CDS is for graduates aiming at officers, AFCAT offers entry into Indian Air Force, and Agniveer recruitment is done for joining services below commission officer level.

1. NDA Selection Process

The National Defence Academy examination is conducted by UPSC to provide admission to the Air Force, Army and Navy wings of NDA and to the Naval Academy to aspiring male and female students who fulfill the criteria to the course based on prescribed eligibility. Whereas physics, chemistry and mathematics are compulsory subjects for both air force and naval entries at 10+2, on the contrary, different academic eligibility to have access to army wings is mandatory.

UPSC had announced NDA & NA Examination (II) 2026 tentatively on September 13 2026, notification to be issued on May 20, 2026 for UPSC.

NDA Selection Stages

Step 1: Written Examination

The written exam is made up of:

  • Mathematics – 300 marks

  • General Ability Test (GAT) – 600 marks

  • Total – 900 marks

There is objective type paper with negative marking.

Step 2: SSB Interview

Those candidates who pass the written test are then screened and interviewed for selection by the Services Selection Board (SSB). It comprises an interview and a selection process where candidates are evaluated for intelligence, personality, confidence, leadership, decision making and leadership qualities.

Step 3: Medical Examination

The candidates who are recommended by the SSB are given the medical test as per the Defence Medical Standards.

Step 4: Final Merit List

Final selection is based on performance in written test and SSB based on medical fitness, eligibility and vacant posts.

2. CDS Selection Process

The Combined Defence Services (CDS) Examination is another entrance examination conducted by UPSC, which can get one accepted as a commissioned officer in the Indian Armed Forces if they manage to secure admission based on the academy as well as the type of entry that they apply for. UPSC released the schedule for the year 2026, according to which CDS II 2026 was released on 20 May 2026 and it will be conducted on 13 September 2026.

CDS Selection Stages

1. Written Examination:
Pattern is dependent upon academy:

  • IMA, INA and AFA: English, General Knowledge and Elementary Mathematics

  • OTA: English and General Knowledge

Objective type question papers with negative marking are used in these exams.

2. SSB Interview:

Those who qualify in the written test are then called for an SSB interview. In this test, qualities of an officer are tested by conducting various psychological tests, group tasks, interviews, etc.

3. Medical Test:

Candidates recommended by SSB have to undergo a medical examination.

4. Final Merit:

The final merit list would be based on the rules, available vacancies, performance on the basis of written test/SSB test and physical fitness.

3. AFCAT Selection Process

Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT) is conducted by the Indian Air Force for admission into various departments. Opportunities for both male and female candidates are available through AFCAT entrance. AFCAT qualification criteria for candidates are provided by the Indian Air Force’s official website.

For the year 2026, Indian Air Force made an announcement about the registration process of AFCAT 02/2026 from 20 May to 19 June 2026.

AFCAT Selection Stages

Step 1: AFCAT Written Examination
The candidates initially undergo computer-based AFCAT tests. The AFCAT syllabus includes sections namely - general knowledge, English verbal abilities, numerical abilities, reasoning ability, and military aptitude.

Step 2: EKT, As Required

Candidates appearing for some technical streams have to take up the Engineering Knowledge Test (EKT), as per the Indian Air Force.

Step 3: AFSB Exam

Those candidates who have been shortlisted in the written test will be called for AFSB. In the selection process, it will consist of an officer's intelligence rating, psychological tests, group activities, and interviews.

Step 4: Medical Examination

Recommended candidates by the AFSB will have to undergo the medical test.

Step 5: All India Merit List

Those candidates who qualify in all stages and meet the medical requirements can be eligible for the merit list.

4. Agniveer Selection Process

The Agnipath recruitment system offers recruitment in the Armed Forces below the rank of commissioned officers. Each branch has its recruitment procedure, therefore, one needs to consult the notification from the respective service in the Army, Navy, or Air Force. 

In the Indian Army, the present recruitment process involves a common entrance examination (CEE) that takes place online. The Army site announced the 2026 CEE schedule for Agniveer General duty, Tradesman & technical categories.

Army Agniveer Selection Stages

1. Online Common Entrance Examination (CEE): 

The eligible candidate first appears for the computerized written test.

2. Recruitment Rally/Physical Test:

Those selected after evaluating the performance in the CEE are taken through additional recruitment processes, one of which is the physical test.

3. Medical Test:

Candidates should obtain a medical certificate issued by an authorized medical in this regard from the respective level.

4. Merit List:

The candidates who clear all the appropriate stages are considered for enrolment based on merit and vacancies in accordance with the recruitment rules.

The actual physical tests, education criteria, age limit and category-wise standards may vary, and thus, candidates must refer to the notification of their recruiting year. The recruiting notifications of the Indian Army explain the CEE followed by other recruitment stages.
