“Require 100 TR.” That‘s all suppliers get in most cases. Which is why there are so many water chillers that are technically right and functionally wrong.
TR alone says nothing about temperatures, flow, pumps or how the load behaves across a shift. Pick on tonnage and you're choosing blind. Here's the order I'd work in.
Sizing a Water Chiller: Load, Temperatures and Flow, in That Order
Start With the Real Heat Load
Add up process heat, pump heat, pipe gains and the growth you actually expect. Where a system already exists, measure instead of guessing: a flow meter and two thermometers will tell you more than any nameplate.
Fix the Temperatures
Standard practice is 7°C supply and 12°C return, but your process may want something else.Choose this before any quote, because every figure downstream depends on it.
Flow Follows Temperature
Cooling in kW equals flow in litres per second times 4.186 times the temperature drop. At a 5°C drop, each TR needs about 0.6 m³/h of water. Here's the part that gets missed: if return water comes back cooler than design, pumps move more water for the same load, and extra chillers often get switched on just to supply that flow. Engineers call it low delta-T. Plants live with it for years.
Get the flow wrong and a perfect chiller still disappoints.
Five Things to Press a Supplier On
Load basis. Good: shows how they reached the figure and asks you to check it. Bad: "Standard 10% margin," with no reasoning behind it.
Pressure drop data. Good: evaporator and condenser water-side pressure drop at design flow, so pumps can be sized. Bad: "Pump selection is your side."
Multi-unit sequencing. Good: lead/lag rotation explained and BMS integration listed. Bad: "Manual switchover is fine."
Start-up scope. Good: their own engineer present, with a written checklist. Bad: "Our dealer will start it."
Running cost. Good: kW/TR at part load and an energy estimate with assumptions shown. Bad: a conversation about purchase price only. A quote that compares just that is hiding the bigger bill.
What the Right Choice Does to Your Margins
Oversizing ties up capital and burns power at part load. That costs more too – undersized lines don’t support heat and therefore stop adding value. Getting the middle correct makes it safe on both sides. Choosing the right pump saves pumping power, which is easy to miss because you don’t see that on the chiller’s bill.. Staged units let one machine be serviced while another keeps the process alive. And a proper start-up scope cuts the rework that usually surfaces in the first month. Be warned, though: collecting honest load data takes effort, and most plants don't have it sitting in a drawer.
Water Chiller Manufacturers in India: Sourcing Is Easy, Matching Is Hard
Water Chiller Manufacturers in India aren't scarce.Industrial Water Chiller Manufacturers in India will all quote from a load figure, but few ask for your design wet-bulb temperature, and it varies a lot by city. A humid coastal site in monsoon can see a higher wet-bulb than a dry northern one in May, which changes tower and chiller performance. ISHRAE publishes weather data for Indian cities; use it. Water Chiller Suppliers in India should also confirm pump and valve lead times, which can hold up a project as easily as the chiller. Water Chiller Dealers in India suit standby spares. Water Chillers Exporters in India should confirm export packing and the destination's power supply.
Why We Ask for a Flow Meter Reading First
We're Aquatech Plus. We design and build industrial cooling and water-treatment solutions for pharma and API plants, food processors, chemical units and commercial HVAC sites. When a customer gives us a load figure, we ask how it was measured. If nobody can say, we ask for a flow meter reading before we quote. It slows the first call and speeds up everything after.
Choose for the Plant You'll Run in Five Years
Choosing water chillers well comes down to three numbers: real load, real temperatures, real flow. Get those on paper and every quote becomes comparable. Then ask each supplier what happens when your plant grows by a third. The answers will separate them quickly.
FAQs
1. What is a sensible margin when sizing a water chiller?
Some extra margin is ok, but I can‘t quote one number without your data. Oversizing kills part load operation.
2. How do I compare quotes from water chiller manufacturers?
Put them on the same temperatures, flow and test conditions first. Price comes after.
3. Do water chiller suppliers in India need a site visit?
For anything custom, yes. A remote quote works for standard sizes, but expect it to change after a visit.
4. Are water chiller dealers fine for standby units?
For standard sizes, yes. A standby that doesn't match the main unit's controls causes more trouble than it saves.
5. Can water chillers exporters in India help with commissioning abroad?
Some send engineers, some don't. Settle that, and who pays for travel, before ordering.
