If you're comparing track chain quotes primarily by invoice price, you may be optimizing for the wrong number. Chain cost isn't determined at purchase—it's determined by how the joint is protected over its working life, and choosing the wrong lubrication family for your duty cycle can quietly erase any upfront savings within a single service season.

Track chains fall into three lubrication families, and each carries a different cost structure once labor is factored in. Sealed-and-lubricated chains seal every joint and fill it with oil, keeping the pin-bushing interface running on a stable, protected film. Sealed-dry chains use the same seal hardware but skip the oil fill, blocking contamination without the internal lubrication benefit. Unsealed chains have no joint seals at all and depend entirely on external greasing—an approach with a lower sticker price but a real, recurring labor cost that rarely shows up on the original invoice.

The maintenance difference is where budgets actually get decided. Unsealed chains require frequent external greasing, and that labor and grease consumption adds up across a fleet in ways procurement often doesn't track back to the original chain decision. Sealed chains shift the workload toward cleaning and seal inspection instead, generally with longer intervals between service actions. Over time, unsealed chains also tend to elongate faster internally, which affects sprocket wear and tension stability—costs that surface elsewhere in the maintenance log, not on the chain's price tag.

Duty cycle should drive the decision, not the quote. Mining and quarry operations running continuous abrasive duty typically get the strongest payback from sealed-and-lubricated chains, since elongation is the dominant cost driver on that kind of work. Light-duty or rental fleets with lower annual hours may never recover a sealed-chain premium if the chain gets replaced for unrelated reasons first. Agricultural equipment with long idle periods often sits in between. Standardizing the chosen family across a machine class also matters—mixing families across a fleet means mixing greasing schedules, service intervals, and spare-parts inventory.

Before ordering, it's worth asking for the seal brand, oil-fill details, and test certification—leak tests, pin torque and rotation checks, and seal-face finish records. Without that documentation, a "sealed" claim on an invoice is just a claim.
